"Choose how to spend your time each day and discover the wonders and dangers of this cyberpunk voxel city," explains Ion Lands, "realistic weather simulation and night-day cycles included. Watch on YouTube Cloudpunk - City of Ghosts Announcement Trailer.Īnd as for Ion Lands' other announcement, that comes in the form of Nivalis, an unexpected but entirely appealing life-sim spin-off set within Cloudpunk's gorgeous open-world city. It's out now on Steam for £12.99/$14.99 USD, and there's a 10% launch day discount. Ion Lands says City of Ghosts is longer than the original story, as well as "darker, tenser, more complex", and promises new areas to explore, new characters and mysteries, HOVA customisation, street racing, and different endings depending on player choices. Main protagonist Rania and canine companion Camus return for another sky-high, HOVA-based jaunt around the neon-drenched metropolis of Nivalis, but this time there's a new hero - deadbeat gambler Hayse - with players switching between two interlinking stories as the adventure unfolds. In my eyes, seeing other cars whip past you in the pouring rain while you’re rushing to deliver a package, or seeing cracks appear in your windshield if you crash into walls and ongoing traffic too often, conveyed the harshness of Rania’s world in a much more direct way than the original. It's a busy day for developer Ion Lands not only is its gorgeous Blade-Runner-esque delivery thriller Cloudpunk's "sequel-sized" paid DLC, City of Ghosts, now available on PC, the studio has announced a new cyberpunk-themed life-sim spin-off too.Ĭity of Ghosts, which seems as good a place as any to start, offers a brand-new, fully voiced story campaign that serves as a direct sequel to the original game. Seeing the world from inside the hovercab truly brought the game’s setting to life for me. Some neighbourhoods harbour dark secrets, and life moves incredibly quickly. Nivalis is presented as a beautiful but corrupt and dangerous place. You can now see the rain fall on your windshield and hear passing cars swoosh past yours as you drive down a highway, which I found a lot more immersive than the original wide perspective. In addition to this, some atmospheric updates have also been added.

For one thing, the update comes with a free-moving camera inside the car, which allows you to see the inside of Rania’s cab up close as you travel through the city. While the wide perspective allows you to admire the cityscape easily, there’s something very intimate and personal about exploring the world from a first-person view.

Previously, the game only allowed players to see their cab speed down its sky-high motorways from a third-person perspective. Perhaps this is why the latest update – the Cockpit update – is such a great addition to the game’s world: it allows players to see Nivalis up close from behind their hovercab’s dashboard for the very first time. Its captivating vaporwave aesthetics reminded me of the recent Paradise Killer, both in style and in the sense that the game’s world sticks with you long after you finish a playthrough. Cloudpunk plunges its players into a layered and immersively stylised world. The game draws you in with its colours and moody atmosphere, and the story, a neo-noir mystery told mostly through voiceovers, complements the visuals nicely. Shops, squares, and neighbourhoods where you deliver packages are laid out on floating platforms between the highways, nestled high up between impressive skyscrapers. You drive on bright and colourful highways that zigzag between buildings. You traverse the landscape in a hovercab, a floating car.
